Who is Dave Vella?

Dave Vella was born and raised in Rockford, where he attended Brookview and Eisenhower public schools before graduating from Boylan Catholic High School. He earned bachelor's degrees in English and Philosophy from Augustana College and later earned his law degree from Northern Illinois University.

Public service has always been part of Dave's life. His grandfather, former State Representative E.J. "Zeke" Giorgi, and his parents, both attorneys, inspired him to give back to the Rockford community.

Since being elected to the Illinois House of Representatives, Dave has championed ethics reform, property tax relief, support for veterans, stronger schools, safer communities, and greater opportunities for working families.

Looking ahead, he remains committed to lowering costs, strengthening schools, supporting law enforcement and first responders, creating economic opportunities, and ensuring state government delivers real results for the communities he serves.

Career

  • Interned at the State’s Attorney and Public Defender’s offices while in law school

  • Served as a Public Defender for 3 years after law school representing indigents in criminal, juvenile, and civil court

  • Joined the family law firm in Rockford, which Dave later took over with his brother and a law partner

  • Served as an elected trustee for Rockford Township

  • Continues providing pro bono legal services to members of the community in need.

Family Life

  • Family and faith have always been central to Dave Vella’s life. He and his wife, Michelle, have been married for 22 years and are proud parents to Ryan and Gracie, along with their two dogs, Oli and Cruz.

  • Dave and his family are devoted Catholics who value service, community, and helping others.
